"A Three Sheets show sounds like a Dreamsicle tastes--a nostalgically smooth guilty pleasure, barely audible over screaming female fans."

We did it, Richmond! (...in a minute.) The first show of the Hall & Oates Tribute Set was a great success, and we are so grateful to everyone for coming out to the show. A very special thanks to Jonathan Blake for his creation of the painting shown below called Don't Sweat It, The Captain's In Charge. I see resemblance to both Jeff Juberget and Captain Max and references to both The Sweater Band and Three Sheets in the painting--perfect for that Weezer / Hall & Oates fan in your life who has everything.
We are grateful to our friend Dave Parrish, who took the shots below, and posted them online before we fell asleep! And now we hop in the Steely Van, and head to the NorVA to do it all again! But until then, we have this fun weekend section feature from Hays Davis at the Richmond Times-Dispatch that reveals the extent of our yacht rock nerdery. Thanks to photographers Eric Perkins and Ashly Covington, whose images grace the pages shown above and below, respectively. See everybody tonight at the debut of our Third Thursday residency at the Tobacco Company!
RICHMOND, VA Three Sheets to the Wind, America's #1 Tribute to Yacht Rock announces a series of special performances highlighting the music of the best-selling musical duo of all time, Hall & Oates. Having covered many of the duo's hits over the years, Three Sheets will now be exploring the music in a more in-depth way in 2013. "I'm most excited about the chance for us to highlight some of the gems that you don't hear on everyday radio," says band leader Topper Dandy. When pressed, he continues, "I don't want to give too much of the set away, but I'm excited that we have a chance to give 'Crazy Eyes' a shot," referencing the Oates-penned-and-sung album cut from 1976's Bigger Than Both of Us. Lest fans of the Hall & Oates hits worry that this project is simply an exercise in obscurity, however, lead singer Captain Max Power promises, "Oh I mean we're going to play the entire greatest hits catalog, too." Although a private performance in Philadelphia, the duo's hometown, is scheduled for April, fans have two opportunities to catch the set in Virginia in late March. Friday March 29th sees the band returning to The National in Richmond, with the following night's performance scheduled at the NorVa in Norfolk, VA. For both shows, the band will be joined by their friends in Virginia's all-star Weezer tribute band, The Sweater Band. For information on on-sale dates for tickets, sign up for the Three Sheets to the Wind email list via the contact tab in the upper-right corner of this page. After more than two years of Third Thursdays at The Republic, the time has come for a change. We had played at Republic a few times prior to our Third Thursdays debut on 16 September 2010, but that September date marked the beginning of what would become an amazing 30 month residency. Playing for (and with) a great group of friends to a packed house night after night really gave us the confidence that this crazy yacht rock idea might actually work. [a few of our favorite Third Thursday Republic show posters below] We made a ton of friends, had a bunch of laughs, debuted dozens of new songs for our repertoire, showed 19 different episodes of Captain Max's meticulously crafted pop culture video series, Three Sheets TV™, and thanks to The Republic, we have never had to charge a dime for a Third Thursday cover charge. As the popularity of the night continues to grow, however, we are excited for the next chapter in the saga. We are proud to announce that beginning February 21st, Third Thursdays will continue at the Tobacco Company! By moving Third Thursdays to the grand old dame of Shockoe Slip, we will be able to expand the one weeknight of the month synonymous with free Yacht Rock. Yes, the night will remain free for all attendees, and will still feature two long sets of music from your pals in Three Sheets to the Wind, America's #1 Tribute to Yacht Rock. Playing this room will allow us to reach more people, make more friends, and provide a bit more elbow room for the yacht rock regulars. Basically, Third Thursdays will continue unabated--just in a room that has palm trees in it. To celebrate the move, Tobacco Company is putting together quite the special event that we're calling the "launch party" on Saturday February 9th. Click the link and sign up to hear about all the drink specials, yacht rock swag and other things that will go down that night. And don't worry--we'll be back with our friends at Republic on Saturday, March 2nd, our first Saturday in our favorite Fan bar since 2009! We are beyond excited for all that 2013 has to offer, and can't wait to see your smiling faces soon as we continue our quest to lower productivity in offices across Richmond on the third Friday of the month. Thanks as always for all you've done to help us get to this point. We are constantly amazed and humbled by the support we receive from Richmond, and will continue to strive to do all we can to retain our title as "luckiest band in Richmond." "If you wanna get through the years, Fairly self-explanatory, we think. This blog post created with @vineapp and www.vineit.co. We had a heck of a time North of the Potomac once again--this time for New Year's Eve at the stunning Carnegie Library. Thanks to our friends from The Mason Inn and George, we played to 1200 partygoers for a killer sold-out event. It was our third sold-out NYE in a row, the third time we were able to enjoy Walter Ego's Auld Lang Syne piano improvisation, the third time that we were all together at midnight for Topper's birthday, but the first time for many of the partygoers that they were exposed to yacht rock. These pictures below [photos: Daniel Swartz/www.revamp.com] proved once again that Hall & Oates covers are timeless, and that yacht rock is the perfect soundtrack both for a little afternoon delight and wee-hours dance parties. "Richmond, Virginia-based Yacht Rock tribute band Three Sheets To The Wind commanded center stage inside the building's main entrance hall, while DJ Phaser (Jay Haynes), Zach Williams, and John Almond took charge of the soundtrack in the adjoining rooms." - Daniel Swartz for www.revamp.com For more pictures from the event, please visit the site below. http://www.revamp.com/story.php?StoryID=2210 We know that this economy is tough on small businesses. We know that the traditional Company Christmas Party has been scaled back or eliminated. We get it. It's easy to cut the holiday line-item when budgets need trimming. It's a shame, though, really, because that party is often a boost to morale, a time to get to know your co-workers outside of a work context, and a great way to make sure you take time to get into the spirit of the season when so many things are happening so fast. We wanted to provide a platform for companies to treat their employees to an escape from the everyday routine. We wanted to keep the ticket price low to make it easy for everyone to get into the spirit, and we wanted to maintain our commitment to producing special events with high production value and surprises to keep things fresh--both for the audience and ourselves. And because we're a little less boring than typical corporate party bands, (and because it was our party), we added a few holiday elements that you would never see at most politically-correct holiday parties. Exhibit one [pictured at left] was our cover version of the SNL holiday classic D*ck in a Box, with Danny Marnier ably handling the Justin Timberlake role. Other holiday tunes included All Alone on Christmas, featuring our talented Jessica Bufford on lead vocals, It's Christmas (Baby Please Come Home, Wham's 80s classic, Last Christmas, The E-Street Band's arrangement of Santa Claus is Coming to Town, (with super roadie, Rusty Nugget, appearing on stage as Santa Claus), and The Eagles' Please Come Home For Christmas. To keep it extra yacht rocky, we also played the 1983 Hall & Oates' Jingle Bell Rock arrangement. Although that video is probably the worst thing the best-selling duo ever did, Topper honored G.E. Smith's guitar solo note-for-note. Members of the extended Three Sheets family comprised the RVA for Africa Choir, hearkening back to the spirit of giving in the 80s. We Are The World was a ton of fun, and contrasted with the frankly depressing-by-comparison British Band Aid answer, Feed The World (Do They Know It's Christmas?). But Walter Ego's backing tracks sounded awesome, and we'd like to think that at least one person in the crowd of hundreds was moved to find out whether he or she could donate to RVA for Africa. (Spoiler alert: You can't.) Several companies brought their employees to the event including Toast Restaurant, (our Lido Deck Sponsor), AFR, our decor sponsor, 103.7 The River, our radio partner, 804RVA, and many more! Special thanks go out to Thomas Coleman for setting the mood and opening the show; Alex McArthur, Kevin Willoughby, and the house crew at the National for making us look and sound great. Thanks also to saxophonist JC Kuhl, flugel horn player, Mike Davison, and percussionist Bobby Bravado for joining us on stage for what was a very special night for Three Sheets in Richmond! But thanks most of all go out to everyone who spent their money to come out and join us for our Company Christmas Party at the National! Happy Holidays! |
